With a little ingenuity you can find all the pieces to a new game just about anywhere. One example is disc golf. Here someone took a frisbee and a basketball inspired basket, added golf rules and came up with the game called disc golf or frisbee golf.
The basic dimensions of a disc golf basket must meet is the ring must be 21 1/3” in diameter and the chains cannot hang more than 22 inches below the rim. The chains will extend into the lower basket which measures about 6.7 inches high and 25.7 inches in diameter.
To find out more sizes and dimensions of disc golf, just continue to read our article. It explores the technical side of the game so you can set up your own championship course.
First off, a quick check of the official rules show that there are no flag height requirements. Your flags can be as high or as low as practical. Second, there are a few height requirements for the basket to meet.
Its overall height cannot be less or more than 52 inches from the ground to the top of the basket. Then from the ground to the bottom of the lower basket, the height should measure in at 25.7 inches.
The lower basket measures approx. 6.7 inches high. Finally, the main basket and chain, to the top of the rim, can only measure 16.1 inches high.
Getting the diameter of the upper basket correct is vital. A change in size could alter the nature of the game. The championship size for a disc golf rim is 21.3 inches in diameter.
The lower basket can be a little bit larger and its official size come sin at 25.7 inches across. This allows the chains hanging from the upper rim to hang naturally . The length of the chains should not touch the bottom of the lower basket.
As in any sport making sure you have the right dimensions improves your shot, helps your shot selection and more.
The official course is usually about 9 or 18 baskets or holes if you like, Some course designers have placed 27 baskets on a single field of play.
The basket design, there can only be one rim, one chain set up and one lower basket. A flag is placed on top so you can keep track of the holes you have played and need to play.
The original game, before it became popular and professional, would use trees, posts or other similar objects as their targets or baskets. Some people have even tried tone baskets. These are target s that send out a distinct sound when hit by the frisbee.
The chain is an important part of the game of disc golf. Part of its function is to help deflect the frisbee up and into the basket. The other part of the chain’s responsibility is to clearly show that the frisbee actually went inside the rim.
To make sure the chain meets championship and official standards the minimum number of strands is 12 going up and down and 6 going around all 12 strands. This design should block all frisbees from sneaking inside the rim from underneath.
The chains need to be tapered so that the bottom of the ‘net’ is smaller than the upper part.
The 12 up and down strands do have an official length. According to the official rules, the chain length should be about 9 inches long. At no time are they to touch the floor of the lower basket.
Of course because the ‘net’ underneath the rim has to be tapered, the length of the side to side chains will vary. They will go steadily smaller as you get to the bottom of the up and down strands.
According to the official rules, there is no official gauge size of chain used on disc gold baskets. You can have them as thin or as thick as you want but be realistic and practical.
The only official word on the chains is that they must be made from galvanized metal. You need top quality chains that are protected from rust and corrosion.
The official disc golf organization, The Professional Disc Golf Association or PDGA, does set a rule for the minimum number of chains only. You need to have a minimum of 12 outer, or up and down, chains.
The minimum number of inner or side to side chains is set at 6. Anything less than these numbers may allow the frisbee to sneak inside the rim without going through the top opening.
You may not have the room in your yard to lay out an official sized course with official sized baskets. One way to solve this problem is to construct a mini disc golf course.
The baskets can either be 13 or 26 inches high. The rim is not going to be about half the size or less than the official sized rim. The chains still do not reach the floor of the lower basket which is just a little larger than the rim above.
The sizes of these parts of the basket depend on the height of the basket.
Disc golf can be as frustrating as real golf. That is because this game has adopted most of the rules of real golf. Trying to get a hole completed in as few strokes as possible can be very frustrating.
It takes skill to compete in real golf and it takes skill to do the same in disc golf. But as they say practice makes perfect. You will need to practice as the wind will be a large factor in how your frisbee flies to the basket.
